5 Arab international ministers and a senior Palestinian official despatched a joint letter to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio opposing plans to displace Palestinians from Gaza, as instructed by President Donald Trump in late January.
The letter was despatched on Monday and signed by the international ministers of Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the UAE, in addition to Palestinian presidential adviser Hussein al-Sheikh. It was reported first by Axios, which stated the highest diplomats met in Cairo over the weekend.
Trump first floated the suggestion of Jordan and Egypt taking in Palestinians from Gaza on Jan. 25. When requested if he was suggesting that as a long-term or short-term answer, the president stated: “Might be both.”
The US president’s feedback echoed long-standing Palestinian fears of being completely pushed from their houses and have been labeled as a proposal of ethnic cleaning by critics. Jordan, Egypt and different Arab nations opposed the proposal.
